Last year’s sell-out salons were a showcase for some of our finest emerging and established writers and a relaxed meeting place for anyone who loves a good story. Tania Hershman
Tania is the author of two short story collections: The White Road and Other Stories, commended for the 2009 Orange Award for New Writers, and most recently My Mother Was An Upright Piano (Tangent Books, 2012), a collection of 56 very short fictions. Tania is founder and editor of The Short Review, an online journal of short story collection reviews and author interviews, and writer-in-residence in the Science Faculty at Bristol University, working on a new collection of short stories inspired by biochemistry. |
James Meek
James’ fifth novel, The Heart Broke In, was published in 2013 and shortlisted for the Costa prize. His novel The People’s Act of Love won the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize, the SAC Book of the Year Award and was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. He is the author of two books of short stories, Last Orders and The Museum Of Doubt. His journalism has also won a number of British and international awards. He is a contributing editor to the London Review of Books. |
Alex Preston
Alex’s first novel, This Bleeding City, was an international bestseller and was selected as one of Waterstones New Voices in 2010. His second, The Revelations, is out now from Faber. He is a published short story writer, essayist and reviewer and a regular panelist on BBC 2’s The Review Show. |
Jane Rogers
Jane has written eight novels including Mr Wroe’s Virgins (which she dramatised as an award-winning BBC 2 serial), Her Living Image (Somerset Maugham Award), and Promised Lands (Writers Guild Best Fiction Award). Her most recent novel The Testament of Jessie Lamb was longlisted for the Man Booker prize and won the Arthur C. Clarke Award 2012. Hitting Trees with Sticks is her first short story collection. She is Professor of Writing at Sheffield Hallam University. |

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY
We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead. On February 23rd, the links between short stories and poetry will be explored: readers include the co-editor of Modern Poetry in Translation, David Constantine and Katrina Naomi, currently researching the lives of working-class suffragettes for a series of poems. Look out for readings from Lionel Shriver, Ben Okri and Helen Simpson. Our one-day What’s The Story? workshops, run by Cathy Galvin and the Society Club’s own literary agent Carrie Kania will now start in March: more details soon.
